Facebook Fan Pages New Features: Page Mode, Custom Tabs, iFrames, EdgeRank & More

by Jeff Schlauch on February 22, 2011

Speaking of Facebook Fan Pages, if they currently make up part of your online marketing strategy, did you know there have been some major changes in the past couple of months?

Page Mode

You can now use facebook as “your page”.

In the past you had to sign on to your facebook account as yourself and then navigate to your fan page. So if i signed on to facebook as Jeff Schlauch then navigated to 26Twelve’s fan page, I would be using 26Twelve’s page as Jeff Schlauch.

Now when you arrive at your page you can select to go into “page mode”. This allows you to use facebook as your page. In my case I select “Use Facebook as 26Twelve Studio Internet Marketing & Web Design.”

Now I can experience all the content of the facebook community as 26Twelve. This allows you to see the true news feed of your fans. That’s not all, now all your notifications, messages, etc… are all for your page.

Finally you will be able top receive email notifications when people interact with your page, instead of having to navigate there and search through postings.

You can interact with your fans now as well, in the past any posts outside of your page would come from your individual profile instead of the page. In fact facebook is now a legitimate B2B communication tool… now your page can actually like another page and interact with it. A wonderful opportunities for online marketing partnerships.

Custom Tabs: Facebook Markup Language (FBML) goes bye-bye… Hello iFrames

Finally for all the developers out there that had to put up with the limits of FBML, it’s on the way out. You may now use your current online management system such as WordPress to iFrame into Facebook. The official news goes like this:

We are in the process of deprecating FBML. If you are building a new application on Facebook.com, please implement your application using HTML, JavaScript and CSS. You can use our JavaScript SDK and Social Plugins to embed many of the same social features available in FBML. While there is still functionality that we have not ported over yet, we are no longer adding new features to FBML.” – Facebook

Facebook algorithm, EdgeRank: Fan Page Updates Visibility

Now comes the part of how to get people to see your updates… One of the best types of updates you can post on Facebook is something about Facebook. So right after I finish this blog i’ll post it on my fan page. But how many people will actually see it.

While EdgeRank is not a new feature it is just becoming more understood. Simliar to Google’s search engine algorithm, Facebook has a technique designed to show people “relevant” information on their news feeds.  With no where near as many factors as googles, it comes down to creating an active community. The more interaction your page and postings receive the more people will see your news.

How do we get people to interact? Stay tuned for a future blog on just that…

Any questions? Do you have any neat Facebook marketing tricks? I’d love to hear about them…
